ABSTRACT
Background: Allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplant is used as
treatment for hematologic malignancies. It is not frequent that donors
present side effects; however, anxiety is a condition that donors may be
experimenting since being evaluated as a suitable donor.
Objective: To investigate the anxiety level in peripheral blood stem
cell donors.
Material and method: A prospective, longitudinal, observational and
descriptive study in which allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell donors
were included. A survey-type study was included using the Stait
Trait and Anxiety Inventory (STAI) in order to determine anxiety level
in donors at the beginning of cell mobilization, before cell harvesting
and 24-hour after collection. Anxiety level was classified into mild,
moderate and high.
Results: Fifteen cell donors were included, 6 males and 9 females, within
an average age of 39.8 years old. Anxiety level was higher in the first survey
since moderate anxiety was present in 40% of patients, meanwhile
in surveys 2 and 3, 93% and 100% of patients presented mild anxiety
levels, respectively. There was a negative correlation between age and
anxiety condition (older patient had less anxiety), positive correlation
between anxiety condition with female gender (females was correlated
with higher levels of anxiety), and with the number of children (to more
children higher anxiety level).
Conclusion: Peripheral blood stem cell donors have higher anxiety
levels before the donation process, which can be explained by fear
to unknown, to the side-effects of filgrastim or to undergo an invasive
procedure.
