ABSTRACT
Rationale: Enteral nutrition is undoubtedly the method of choice for artificial nutritional support, due to its physiologic nature and the extent of scenarios where it can be administrated.
Objective: To assess the impact of a methodology for community projection of hospital enteral nutrition upon selected indicators of nutritional and metabolic state of children with onco-hematological diseases.
Study design: Retrospective, analytical.
Patients: Sixteen children (Lympho-proliferative diseases: 11; Solid tumors: 5) assisted between January 2013 and January 2014 at the “Juan Manuel Márquez” Pediatric Teaching Hospital Havana City (Cuba) following the personalized enteral nutrition regime as delivered at home.
Methods: Change on selected anthropometric and biochemical indicators of the child’s nutritional status one year after admission.
Results: Children with solid tumors initially showed greater weight loss and reduced food energy intake. Improvement of nutritional status was observed in both subgroups, with significant weight gain: Lympho-proliferative diseases: 3.6 ± 1.4 Kg vs. Solid tumors: 1.3 ± 0.4 Kg. Placement of a gastrostomy followed by administration of home-made culinary formulas supplemented with polymeric solutions was the most effective nutritional support scheme, and the one in which higher weight gain was achieved.
Conclusions: Personalized enteral nutrition delivered at home effectively improves nutritional status of the child with onco-hematological diseases.
