ABSTRACT
Cancer is one of the main causes of death among adult and children worldwide. In Mexico it represents the first cause of childhood mortality; it has increased during the last decade. Most of the mediastinal tumors are malignant and their complications are life threatening. Therefore these patients require surgical management. This paper reviews the diagnostic and therapeutic advances in their management; its goal is to propose practical and objective approach and to analyze the current surgical criteria. The authors reviewed the last ten years of the relevant publications concerning the diagnosis and treatment of the most common mediastinal tumors. We conclude that the complexity of these tumors requires a multidisciplinary approach by pediatricians, oncologists, radiologists and pediatric surgeons since they are a major cause of disability and death among children. Modern advances in technology permit a precise diagnosis which leads to the adequate surgical or medical treatment.
