ABSTRACT
Introduction: metabolic syndrome can be treated with lifestyle changes. Objective: to evaluate a program of exercise and healthy diets on metabolic disorders in metabolic syndrome.
Method: a non-randomized clinical trial between October 2011 and April 2012 in the health area of Velasco, Gibara municipality was conducted. Thirty five patients for control group and 34 for the experimental group were chosen. The experimental group was recommended a low calorie healthy diet and aerobic exercise program for 30 weeks; the control group continued with their normal activities. To compare the means with t test or Mann-Whitney test, and the association between variables Χ2 test were used, the SPSS statistical package was used, with a significance level of 0.05.
Results: in the experimental group, diastolic blood pressure, total serum cholesterol and total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol were significantly reduced, and HDL-cholesterol concentrations increased. Anthropometric measurements were not modified.
Conclusions: exercise program and diet favorably altered metabolic disorders in patients with metabolic syndrome.
