Treatment with acupuncture in patients suffering from peripheral facial paralysis

ABSTRACT
Introduction: peripheral facial paralysis affects nearly 40 000 people in the world each year. The use of drugs is effective in the treatment of Bell's palsy, but at the same time causes adverse effects. Acupuncture treatment is a possible alternative.
Objective: to assess acupunctural treatment in patients suffering from peripheral facial paralysis.
Methods: a quasi-experimental study in 60 patients suffering from peripheral facial paralysis was performed at the service of the integral rehabilitation from La California Sur in Venezuela from January to December 2013. The sample was composed of 60 patients.
Results: the most affected sex was the female one is the in the age group between 30 and 44 years, with a total number of 36 patients representing 60 %. The treatment results were evaluated as good in 49 patients (81.66 %).
Conclusions: acupuncture treatment in patients with peripheral facial paralysis is an effective alternative.
