ABSTRACT
Introduction: Tracheobronchitis and pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation are the low respiratory tract infection related with this procedure, they are the main infections acquired in the intensive care units.
Objective: To determine the low respiratory infection incidence related with mechanic ventilation in adults hospitalized in intensive care unit in “Isla de la Juventud”.
Methods: Descriptive, prospective and transversal study about behavior of low respiratory infection associated with mechanical ventilation was realized in the intensive care unit at “Heroes del Baire” hospital in “Isla de la Juventud”, 2012-2014 years.
Results: APACHE II medium was 17.4 point. The rates and incidence density of tracheobronchitis was higher than pneumonia. Coma and previous use of antibiotics were the most frequent risk factors. The average hospital overstay was 14 days in ill patients. Enterobacter. sp and Acinetobacter. sp were gram negative bacterium more observed. Antimicrobial resistance was more than 50 percent.
Conclusions: Both rate and incidence density of low respiratory infection associated with mechanical ventilation were higher, tracheobronchitis predominated as an independent entity and affected hospital overstay in patients with mechanical ventilation.
