ABSTRACT
Introduction: Between March and April 2009 in Mexico, a new epidemic of influenza called H1N1 was presented. The virus was associated with atypical pneumonia. The risk groups were young, old and pregnant women. Mexico´s Health Department established Influenza Monitors Health Units. In December 2014 were more cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Disease (SARD) and the surveillance protocol began.
Objective: To analyze the epidemiologic characteristics of hospitalized patients during December 2013 and January 2014 with diagnosis of SARD.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of patients admitted with SARD diagnostic, epidemiological analysis was performed and sample for RT-PCR was taken.
Results: 73 patients with a median of 46 years were analyzed, all of them have fever and more than 95% were cough and malaise, 39.7% were positives to RT-PCR influenza virus, 89.95% were H1N1. These were more probable to require endotracheal intubation and to die during hospitalization.
Conclusions: During 2013 and early 2014 was presented an Influenza H1N1 outbreak, 39% of patients had a result ERAG RT-PCR positive for influenza virus and 90% because of H1N1. Dyspnea and tachypnea are associated with the presence of H1N1. The frequency of deaths associated with H1N1 remains high. All of this should alert the clinician to the importance of this illness.
