ABSTRACT
Introduction: the strategy of social marketing of the masculine condom was implemented to encourage protected sexual relations and to reduce HIV/aids epidemics. Objective: to analyze the social marketing of condom in Havana in 2012.
Methods: evaluative research study to assess the carrying out of actions within the strategy of condom marketing in Havana in 2012. Qualitative as well as quantitative techniques were used whereas the sources of information included the general population, the marketing coordinators, sellers and warehouse workers in traditional and non-traditional outlets.
Results: marketing coordinators received training courses for this task. Planned actions including education, information on and promotion of use of condom were all met, with good organization and quality and they got through to the population. The study groups accepted to a greater extent the use of condom, mainly for occasional sexual intercourses, but to lesser extent in regular stable sexual relations. The supply, the coverage and the distribution of condoms remained unchanged in traditional outlets whereas non-traditional ones faced difficulties in supplying, distributing and storing condoms.
Conclusions: social marketing of condoms has advanced in terms of information and training actions and acceptance and use of condoms by the population; however, there are still gaps in the stability of their provision and distribution in non-traditional outlets.
