ABSTRACT
Introduction: the essential oils of medicinal plants are typically composed by a complex of chemical compounds, mainly derivates of terpenes as geraniol and caryophyllene. The Geraniol is found in many species of flowers, including roses. The caryophyllene is a common sesquiterpene occurring in many essential oils.
Objective: assay against Gram positive bacteria from the Staphylococcus genus the antimicrobial activity of the compounds geraniol and cariophyllene.
Methods: to verify the antimicrobial effect of the geraniol and cariophyllene, was used a MRSA strain
Staphylococcus aureus 358. Using the microdilution method was determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the modulatory activity of both compounds alone or associated with the aminoglycoside antibiotics gentamicin, kanamycin, amikacin and neomicin.
Results: the results demonstrated that the geraniol enhanced the kanamycin antibiotic effect, but the cariophyllene enhanced the resistance of the bacterium against the neomycin.
Conclusions: the results demonstrated that both compounds have modulatory effect when associated with antibiotics.
