ABSTRACT
Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux is a common condition in pediatric population. Those who
develop complications know as gastroesophageal reflux disease. Antireflux surgery is the most
commonly performed in children, its aim is prevent complications and remission of symptoms. The success
rate is 86%.
Material and Methods: retrospective, descriptive study of patients undergoing surgery for gastroesophageal
reflux disease, with the aim of identify comorbidities associated with surgical failure.
Results: analysis of 51 procedures in 44 patients. Nissen fundoplication were 37%, 52% fundoplication
and gastrostomy; 30 patients are neurological impairment (68%), 13 had fundoplication failure
(30%). Reoperation was performed in 7 patients. No statistically significant difference in fundoplication
failure in patients with or without neurological impairment.
Discussion: antireflux surgery has a high success rate. It has been observed that 66% had some degree
of symptoms. Higher failure rates were reported in patients with comorbidities. The effectiveness
of the antireflux surgery is similar in children with or without neurological impairment. The range of failure
is on average 18 months and can be functional for up to 2 years.
