ABSTRACT
Introduction
Central venous catheters (CVCs) are placed by different Sevices in a given Hospital Unit by different
physicians with different techniques potentially harmful in a 2-15%. This essay compares mechanical
complications associated to the catheterization of a central vein catheter placed by different Fellow Residents.
Materials and Methods
Retrospective, descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study. Identifying 68 pediatric files who had a
CVC placed between December 2013 and March 2014.
Results.
68 catheters were placed, 48 using a blind modified Seldinger technique, 20 were placed using an open
cutdown technique. Mechanical complications were present in 49 (72%) cases, being the most
common Second Operator. There were a higher number of complications among the procedures performed
by 1st year Fellow Interns. Complication rates by Service: Neonatology 78%, PICU 88% and Pediatric
Surgery 60%.
Discussion
Minor complications were predominant, representing a higher percentage compared to what is referred
by international literature, given that in this last one USG imaging is used. Open cut technique had a
lower number of complications compared to the modified Seldinger technique.
