ABSTRACT
Feral dog population control is not an easy task in highly populated cities, even when there are high cost sterilization campaigns. Mexico City’s street dog population increases constantly, invasive sterilization techniques are out of the regular family budget, and an alternative strategy to control this population is needed. Since the early 70´s, the acellular egg coat named the zona pellucida has been considered as a target for fertility regulation in human and animal populations. The goal of the present work was to analyze the alterations in the ovarian histology of female dogs actively immunized with porcine ZP3 protein. Results obtained show that active immunization induces a significant reduction in fertility as indicated by the lower amount of first and second degree follicles, and an increase in leukocyte infiltration in response to the protein inoculation.
