ABSTRACT
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder (PDT), manifested by abdominal pain and
bowel disturbances. Its prevalence in the general population ranges between 5 and 20%, reaching up to 35% depending
on the population studied. The abdominal pain or discomfort is the primary symptom. At present it is not known
precisely what the pathogenic mechanisms in which IBS occurs are because it is a heterogeneous syndrome. Various
factors have been proposed as responsible such as motility disturbances, changes in visceral sensitivity and psychological
factors. The diagnosis is prominently clinical, based on Rome III criteria and the careful exclusion of disorders that
have similar manifestations. Four subtypes are recognized based on the predominant bowel habit behavior according to
the characteristics of stools by shape and consistency. Treatment must be multidisciplinary and personalized for each
patient, including dietary advice to reduce the intensity of symptoms in periods of exacerbation.
