Relation between family functionality perception and nicotine dependence in 15 to 24 years old young smokers

ABSTRACT
Introduction. Smoking is a mental and behavioral disorder due to the consumption of tobacco, which has contains nicotine, an addictive substance. In Mexico, it is considered a public health problem and family is an important means that can distance from or expose youngsters to smoking, consequently the objective of this study is to know the relation between family functionality perception and nicotine dependence in young smokers.Material and methods. A cross-sectional analytic study was done with a non-statistical sampling that included 15 to 24 years old young smokers. Their sociodemographic data was taken and the family APGAR and Fagerström questionnaires. The SPSS program version 19 was used for the 2 descriptive statistics, χ2 for the difference in distribution and Pearson Correlation.
Results. In this study seventy one 15-to-24-years-old young with an average age of 20.6, who presented active smoking. As for the family functionality, they were norm functional in 78.9%, with a mild dysfunction 16.9% and presenting severe dysfunction in 4.2%. The mild level of dependence to nicotine turned out as 80.3%, moderate dependence in 18.3% and high dependence in 1.4%. The relation between family functionality perception and the level of dependence to nicotine through the Pearson correlation resulted in r=0.003.
Discussion. According to the data obtained, the family functionality was found as normo functional in the majority of the patients, being the mild dysfunction less frequent, and as for the severe dysfunction less than the mild. The level of dependence was found majorly mild and subsequently decreasing the frequency to moderate and severe. Finally, it is concluded that there is a positive correlation between family functionality and nicotine dependence.
