Hypogastric artery ligation in the treatment of the obstetric haemorrhages in emergencies

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The haemorrhage continues being one of the main causes of maternal death in the world; the internal iliac or hypogastric arteries ligation is an effective proceed in the solution of the severe haemorrhages of the pregnancy, childbirth and puerperal period.
Objective: To describe the employment of the hypogastric arteries ligation, in the surgical treatment of the obstetric haemorrhages in emergencies.
Methods: Descriptive, retrospective and of transversal court study in 31 patients that were applied the hypogastric arteries ligation for the obstetric haemorrhages control; from January 1988 to December 2012 at "Ciro Redondo Garcia" General Hospital in Artemisa, Cuba.
Results: The prevailing age of the intervened patients was 27 years old. The haemorrhagic event was preceded with more frequency by caesarean operation (72,4%). The uterine atony was the main indication of procedure (29,0%). The uterus was conserved in a case and the bleeding control was achieved in all patients. It was not showed up neither complications nor maternal deaths.
Conclusions: The previous branch ligation of the hypogastric arteries is considered a sure and effective procedure and even its utility is employed in the treatment of obstetric haemorrhages in emergency of difficult handling for other conventional methods.
