ABSTRACT
Respiratory complications are the first cause of death in patients with tetraplegia,
including both the acute and chronic stage of the disease. It has been postulated
that the main cause of all these respiratory complications is weakness of
intercostals and abdominal muscles, and partial or complete dysfunction of the
diaphragm. Respiratory physical therapy has turned out to be an indispensable
procedure in the handling and treatment of patients with this kind of injury. This document tries to establish a treatment guide in patients with respiratory
dysfunction cause by spinal cord injury.
