ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to evaluate the fascioliscide efficacy of 6-chloro-2-metiltio-5-(1-naftiloxi) bencimidazol called compound “alfa” against 4 and 10 week-old flukes in cattle. Fifteen Fasciola hepatica fluke–free steers were divided into 3 groups of 5 animals each. Each animal was orally infected with 300 metacercariae given 150 on day 0 and 150 on day 45. All animals were sampled for faces to determine the presence of Fasciola-eggs by means of coprological analysis. On day 75, Groups 1 and 2 were treated with compound alfa and triclabendazol at a dose of 12 mg/kg per os, respectively. Group 3 remained as the non-treated control. Forty-five days after treatment, all animals were sacrificed; the liver was isolated to count the flukes. Efficacy was assessed on the number of flukes present in the treated groups in relation to the control one. Results indicated an efficacy of 99.4% for compound alfa, and of 100% for triclabendazol, respectively. It is concluded that compound alfa exerted a high efficacy against 4 and 10 week-old flukes.
