Analysis of the spiritual welfare of the cardiac patients hospitalized in a health institution

Objective: To analyze the spiritual welfare of persons who are cardiac patients, in a health institution.
Material and methods: Study not experimental, analytical, prospective cross-sectional study. Sample by simple randomization (n = 297) people with heart disease, both sexes, oriented in three areas. Under informed consent data were collected with the Spiritual Perspective Scale instrument consists of two dimensions: beliefs and practices; 10-item Likert, value of 1-6; the level of spirituality was measured from low (10-30 points) to high (46-60 points). Descriptive analysis, correlation tests (Pearson and Spearman) and comparison (χ
2 and Mann-Whitney) for variables spirituality and demographic variables; was considered p ‹ 0.05 as significant.
Results: 50.8% female, 89.6% catholic, 60% has had previous hospitalizations. 68% have high degree of spirituality and 24.9% average. Spirituality is correlated with the age (r = 0.226, p = 0.000), being stronger with beliefs (r = 0.214, p = 0.000). Women (Z = -2.245, p = 0.025), in union (married or cohabiting) (χ
2 = 9.216, gl = 2, p = 0.010) or are ≥ 60 years or older (Z = -2.541, p = 0.011) there are more spirituality.
Conclusions: In disease states such as heart disease, people increase their practices and spiritual beliefs, this helps in self-transcendence and its spiritual welfare.
