After the first report of an association of viral infection
and atherosclerosis in 1970,1 several studies have suggested that there is a link between arteriosclerotic disease and persistent infection or seropositivity of certain micro-organisms, such as
Chlamydia pneumoniae, cytomegalovirus, Helicobacter
pylori, and herpes simplex virus.
