ABSTRACT
Introduction: this paper comprised a qualitative study conducted to evaluate the
implementation of a new tool for the pharmaceutical professional training under the
pharmaceutical professional re-certification program of the College of Pharmacists
of Costa Rica.
Objective: to evaluate the use of asynchronous teaching strategies for pharmacists
through the design of an online course on Cosmetology and Dermopharmacy,
certified by the Department of Professional Development in the College of
Pharmacists.
Methods: this course was scheduled for two months divided into eight individual
modules. Forty five of the 60 professionals enrolled in the course finished their
training and were sent the electronic evaluation of the strategy. The instrument
consisted of an electronic form to be filled on line with baren rating and quantifying
questions in order to evaluate the academic performance and the teaching strategy
as an effective way of carrying out those activities for pharmaceutical training.
The electronic data were tabulated and analyzed using Microsoft Office Excel® 2007
in addition to the triangulation technique to relate data from every part of the
instrument.
Results: all the evaluated participants responded; 36 % were men and 64 %
women and over 90 % believed that the strategy was very important, interesting
and useful.
Conclusions: it was concluded that the teaching strategy is effective as a way to
promote the professional development of pharmacists, who are unable to attend
face-to-face training courses due to the nature of their work or how far away they
live from the capital of the country.
