ABSTRACT
Calcaneum fractures represent a 60% from the tarsus fractures and most of them occur in productive-aged men what represents an important economic impact. These fractures continue to be a challenge for orthopedist surgeons because there is a controversy about their management. Through a retrospective, transversal, descriptive and observational study, we analyzed a total of 20 fractures in 20 patients. The average age was 44 years. The most affected side was the left one. The main cause of the fracture was falling down from a certain height. These fractures presented as isolated in 65% of the cases and they were associated to other lesions in the rest of the cases (35%). In all of the cases, open-reduction was practiced with articular surface restitution and fixing through special plaque for calcaneum AO, with or without osseous grafting. The most frequent complication was due to hurt dehiscence (20% of the cases). The average following period was of 20 months, with excellent results in seven cases (35%), good in twelve cases (60%) and poor in just one case (5%) according to the Maryland’s functional evaluation for calcaneum fractures. These kind of fractures are produced by a high energy liberation mechanism, so an integral evaluation is required in order to discard associated lesions. This is a lesion which has to be treated by experienced surgeons.
