ABSTRACT
Introduction: Density index IndC
sustD = C
sust/D can be an alternative method for measuring the urinary excretion of a substance.
Objective: To assess the analytical and diagnostic value of urinary excretion of a substance predicted from IndC
sustD.
Material and methods: We recovered the density (D) and concentration values of creatinine and the substance of interest (C
sust; with sust: total proteins, albumin, calcium, magnesium or uric acid) measured in children of either sex, with ages between 1-19 years, treated at the «Juan Manuel Márquez» Teaching Pediatric Hospital (Havana City, Cuba) between 2009 and 2014. The index of excretion, IndEx, was estimated from IndC
sustD and used henceforth to calculate the urinary concentration of the substance once adjusted for expected creatinine in 24 hours, as per Schwartz et al. (1973).
Results: Relationship IndEx versus IndC
sustD was linear enough throughout the analytical range. The accuracy of urinary excretion of the substance as predicted from IndC
sustD was similar to that resulting from the use of IndEx. The frequency of «abnormal» values reported with IndC
sustD was not statistically different from the one observed in 24-hour urine collections, at least for albumin and calcium.
Conclusions: IndC
sustD can be a useful alternative for the study of the urinary excretion of a substance.
