ABSTRACT
An observing, prospective, descriptive cross study was made in thirty seven elders from sixty to eighty years old. The aim of this study was to identify the signs and symptoms of temporo- mandibular disorders frequently present at this age. The signs and symptoms which were assessed were: pain, joint noise, functional limitation of the mandibular opening, lost teeth, tooth abration, vertical dimension, rear collapse of bite and prosthetic rehabilitation.
46% of the sample (n = 17) had pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This pathology was present with at least, a symptom for example: cracking sounds, bruxism and limited opening. 43.2% (n = 16) showed clear sings of loss vertical dimension. 81% (n = 30) had bite collapse. 54% (n = 20) of elders who did not have pain, were exposed at least to one risk factor.
