Ocular allergies in the pediatric patient

ABSTRACT

This article aims to review the pathophysiology, symptoms, classification and treatment of ocular allergy in pediatric patients. Ocular allergy is one of the most frequent ocular illness in pediatric patients and this is often accompanied by other allergic manifestations. It is predominantly caused by a type I immediate hypersensitivity reaction and there are two acute forms: seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) and perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC); and three chronic forms: vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VQC); Atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AQC) and giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC).
