ABSTRACT
Breast cancer associated with pregnancy is defined as breast carcinoma diagnosed during pregnancy or the first postpartum year. It is an uncommon condition, and its presentation marks a challenge. Its frequency and clinicopathological characteristics in the National Cancer Institute, Mexico, are unknown.
Objective: To determine the clinicopathology of breast cancer associated with pregnancy in the National Cancer Institute, Mexico, from 2005 to 2013.
Material and methods: Retrospective review of 87 cases of breast cancer associated with pregnancy. Information was collected from the database of the institution’s Catastrophic Insurance Program. The clinicopathologic features of breast cancer and pregnancy were studied. Descriptive statistical tests were performed through percentages and measures of central tendency.
Results: Breast cancer associated with pregnancy accounted for 1.42% of the breast cancers in our institution. The mean age at presentation was 35 years; 41.3% presented postpartum. Advanced clinical stages were found in 90.9% of the cases. Negative hormone receptors were observed in 61% and 68.5% were HER2-negative.
Discussion and conclusions: In this review, we confirmed that the diagnosis of breast cancer associated with pregnancy is higher in advanced and metastatic stages; and we noted the tumor biological factors, such as negative hormone receptors and negative HER2, which indicate a worse prognosis compared to non-pregnant women.
