ABSTRACT
Objectives: To identify and compare the complications during and after
tracheostomy with open and percutaneous technique.
Material and method: A retrospective, comparative and observational
study of patients submitted to open and percutaneous tracheostomy
from 2003 to 2013; 336 files from patients submitted to tracheostomy
were reviewed: 245 with percutaneous technique and 91 with open
technique to identify trans- and post-surgical complications in 10 years.
Statistical analysis was done with the program SPSS version 11.5 (SPSS,
Inc., Chicago, Ill.), using the χ
2 test and Fisher exact test, considering
significant p ‹0.05.
Results: There were 5% of trans-surgical complications and 10% postsurgical
complications. A significant difference was reported in postsurgical
bleeding in open tracheostomy.
Conclusions: Both techniques are safe, according to our results, because
complication rates were low; however, it is important to individualize
the procedures, because they have very specific indications to avoid
complications.
