ABSTRACT
Background: Because the sudden hearing loss is a condition considered
a medical emergency, it is important to diagnose it in time to start
treatment. One of the probable causes of this condition is the formation
of microthrombi, these may be associated with the presence of
anticardiolipin antibodies. There is evidence in the literature that there
is association between progressive sensory hearing loss of unknown
origin and sudden hearing loss with elevated anticardiolipin antibodies.
Objective: To determine whether association between the presence of
sudden hearing loss with elevated anticardiolipin antibodies in patients
with this condition assisted at Hospital Juárez de México.
Material and method: A descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study
was made, in which after the clinical diagnosis of sudden hearing loss,
a tonal audiometry was done, that evaluated the auditory function assessing
the air and bone way to confirm the diagnosis, and anticardiolipin
antibodies IgG and IgM were requested. Results were assessed in
posterior consultations.
Results: Samples for anticardiolipin antibodies were taken in 15 patients.
Average age was 50 years. None patient had bilateral sudden hearing
loss at diagnosis. Results of anticardiolipin antibodies of 15 patients
were normal.
Conclusions: This study did not find elevation of anticardiolipin antibodies,
maybe it is needed a bigger sample to find some association,
besides, four patients assisted to different laboratories, thus, measure
technique may vary, influencing results.
