ABSTRACT
High contrast resolution and capacity for differentiation of tissues
contained in the orbit make magnetic resonance a very useful tool in
detection and characterization of different pathological processes in the
eye ball and the components of the intraconal and extraconal space.
The objective of this article is to describe and illustrate the anatomy of
the orbit and its contents, and the main findings in different magnetic
resonance sequences, for the main pathological processes of congenital,
infectious/inflammatory, tumorous, and vascular origin that affect the
eye and its adjacent tissues at pediatric age.
Precise knowledge of the normal features of the different components
of the orbit, their location and interrelationship, and the principal morphological
findings and different behavior in each magnetic resonance
sequence used to evaluate congenital, infectious/inflammatory, tumorous,
and vascular pathology of the eye ball and adjacent structures is of
great importance as part of multidisciplinary management of this small
space which, in addition to involving tissue of the three germ layers,
is intimately related to the central nervous system and the paranasal
sinuses, for which reason a precise evaluation of the origin and extension
of the disease is necessary for proper management and monitoring.
Magnetic resonance is a useful imaging method for detection, characterization,
and determination of the extension of various pathological
processes of the eye ball and its adjacent tissues. Imaging specialists
need to be familiar with ocular anatomy and the principal manifestations
of each entity to provide clear and precise information for management
and monitoring of each patient.
