ABSTRACT
Objective. To evaluate the unreamed tibial nail (UTN) for treatment of traumatic tibial pseudoarthrosis. Material and methods. From August 1997 to August 2001, 33 adult patients, 29 male and 4 female, who had tibial pseudoarthrosis were treated by focus debridement and bone grafting as well as intramedullary nailing without reaming of the tibial canal and diaphysectomy of the fibula. Age in average was 35.6 years. Results. Tibial union was obtained in 32 out of the 33 cases, in an average of 7 months. The remaining patient required a second bone graft application. A rotated skin flap was performed in 4 patients as a result of cicatrization failure. Conclusion. The UTN has proved to be useful in stabilizing the tibia as a part of treatment for tibial pseudoarthrosis, with satisfactory response in 96 % of our series.
