ABSTRACT
Cutaneous tumors with spindle-cell morphology are difficult to interpret histologically. The possibilities are multiple, and frequently the examination under HE microscopy is insufficient for rendering a specific diagnosis. The use of immunohistochemical stains is essential to distinguish malignant neoplasms from their benign counterparts and/or from reactive processes.Herein, we present a tumor of the hand that was labeled initially as a pleomorphic fibrosarcoma, but that on further examination should be better classified as a spindle-cell tumor not otherwise specified. This entity was recently described in the dermatologic literature and its diagnosis has significant prognostic implications.
