ABSTRACT
Objective. This paper describes the rather uncommon condition of distal tibio-fibular diastasis in children. Ankle fractures or ligament tears in adults are among the most frequent traumatic injuries, as well as Salter and Harris epyphyseal fractures in children. However, tibio-fibular diastasis alone in children is an unpublished condition. Material and methods. Two cases of 7 and 13 years of age had the referred injury 4 and 30 days before diagnosis. First case was treated by manipulation, while second one was treated by reduction and fixation with open surgery. Results. After 18 months of follow-up both patients had excellent result as ankle was perfectly stable, clinical and radiologically. Conclusion. Unstability of the tibio-fibular joint must be intentionally suspected in children or adolescents in order to treat it on time and avoiding the chronic painful and unstable ankle.
