ABSTRACT
Serratia marcescens is a member of the genus Serratia, which is part of the family Enterobacteriaceae. It is motile, non-endospore forming Gram-negative rods. S. marcescens is an opportunistic pathogen and it is a rare cause of community-acquired infections. It has emerged as an important nosocomial health care-associated pathogen. Some biotypes of Serratia marcescens produce the non-diffusible red pigment prodigiosin. The non-pigmented biotypes are more virulent. We report the case of a patient who developed empyema with non-pigmented strain of Serratia marcescens.
