ABSTRACT
Introduction: The intussusception is the most frequent reason of intestinal obstruction in children. The clinical typical picture is abdominal pain, palpable mass and stools with aspect of “jelly of currant”.
Objective: To show the experience
with the diagnosis and treatment of intussusception in children hospitalized in a General Hospital during a period of 12 years.
Materials and methods: We reviewed the charts of children with diagnosis of intussusception in a General Hospital.
Results: We reviewed 31 charts, 17 men and 14 women. The clinical data were abdominal pain and vomiting in 84%, distended abdomen and bloody stools 77%, palpable mass 32%. The intussusception ileo-colica was the most frequent. The treatment was surgical in all, 21 with manual reduction, the others with intestinal resection, anastomosis primary or ileostomy.
Conclusions: In a child with acute abdominal pain,
vomit, evacuations with bloody stools and abdominal palpable mass the most probable diagnosis is intussusception.
