ABSTRACT
Introduction: since year 2005, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infected
patient’s attention begun in secondary care institutions, something that so far was
exclusive for "Pedro Kourí" Institute, thus creating a completely new situation for
health care providers in this level.
Objective: to characterize attention to HIV positive patients admitted in "Manuel
FajardoRivero" University Hospital.
Material and Methods: a retrospective study was performed between 1st of January, 2006 and December 31st, 2013; it included all patients discharged from the institution with the confirmed diagnosis of HIV infection.
Results: male population in middle ages of life was predominant in the study, in general with an advanced stage of immunosuppression. More than one third of
patients presented opportunistic diseases, especially esophageal candidiasis and neurotoxoplasmosis. Non opportunistic diseases leaded as cause of death, mainly
bacterial pneumonia.
Conclusions: HIV infection and related illnesses are a reality in Cuban secondary care, and it implicates constant updating and revision of hospital guidelines.
