Psychosocial factors that have an impact on depression of the elderly

ABSTRACT
Introduction: senescents are one of the important age groups of the Cuban population, being necessary to study depression, as one of the affective processes that are damaged with age increase, combining multiple factors.Objective: to describe the psychosocial factors that have an impact on depression of the elderly.
Methods: exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional study from January to December 2012 performed at "Felipe Poey" Teaching Polyclinic, Nueva Paz health area, it was applied a questionnaire to a sample of 146 elderly selected by opinion-based approach with specific inclusion criteria, exploring variables age, sex, psychological, social, and depression; a Geriatric Depression Scale to know the behavior of the disease.
Results: there was a predominance of females in 64.38 %, being the group of 75-79 years, that of highest incidence, to 26.04 %, the psychological factor that most influenced depression was the fear of death, with 78,08 %, the social factor, the need for social communication, for 56,85 % between psychosomatic symptoms it was found hopelessness to 86.98 %, with predominance of the established depression in 50.69 %.
Conclusions: there are multiple psychosocial factors of depression in the elderly combining psychological and social factors that are present in family cohabitation as maladjustment to retirement and social communication, being hopelessness typical that leads to major depression.
