ABSTRACT
Burns are a major health problem worldwide, since their morbidity and mortality are still very high in some countries, leading to considerable expenses on the part of the state, and causing sequelae that often prevent carrying out everyday activities. Burns have many different causes and affect people in all age groups, from infancy to old age. Burn patients may undergo surgery at any stage of their condition, and consequently the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the anesthetics may be altered. This must be taken into account when selecting drugs for these patients, in order to avoid complications. Some of the specific problems that anesthesiologists may face when treating these patients include hypovolemic shock (loss of fluids and electrolytes due to evaporation, disturbances in capillary permeability), hyperkalemia, cardiac disturbances, neuroendocrine response to trauma, catabolism, hypoproteinemia, damage due to inhalation injury, full stomach and others.
