ABSTRACT
Ghrelin and Obestatin are recently discovered hormones with important regulatory functions over appetite. Ghrelin is
known as the first peripheral orexigenic hormone with central actions. One of its most important actions is to induce
appetite, accelerate gastric emptying and it is mainly secreted before meals. On the other hand, obestatin has opposite
actions to ghrelin over appetite regulation, glucose regulation and pancreatic beta cell survival.
Functions attributed to these hormones relate them to chronic pathological states, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes
mellitus. They also play a role in other illnesses such as anorexia, kidney failure, heart disorders, etc. Genetic studies of
these hormones show polymorphic variants that are related to weight increase and glucose intolerance susceptibility.
Possible therapeutic uses of these hormones have been suggested.
