ABSTRACT
Tooth wear from attrition has often been referred to as being the same as bruxism, thereby attributing this occasionally nonspecific secondary symptom (which can be due to multiple causes, all of which can result in deterioration of the teeth through clenching or grinding) the same importance as what is in fact a complex and multifactorial condition. Modern concepts of bruxism suggest that it should be regarded primarily as a neuromuscular disorder of undetermined origin that is associated with rhythmic jaw movements (RJM) during chewing, swallowing, and breathing, which are the result of neurophysiological and neurochemical changes.
