ABSTRACT
Previous studies demonstrated that Lactobacillus casei induces protective responses in heterogenic mice (NIH) against infection due to parasites such as Hymenolepis nana and Trichinella spiralis. The aim of the present study was to determine the protection induced by the intraperitoneal (ip) inoculation of viable Lactobacillus casei into congenic mice against T. spiralis infection. Twenty-two parasite-free female adult BALB/c mice were allocated at random into four groups (Lc-1, Lc-2, Lc-3 and C) of five to six animals each. Each mouse from groups Lc-1, Lc-2 and Lc-3 was inoculated by the ip route with 1.8 × 109 viable Lactobacillus casei as follows: In Lc-1, on days –14 and –7; in Lc-2, on days –11 and –4; and in Lc-3, on days –7 and –1. Animals from the control Group (C) did not receive any treatment. All animals from the four groups received 500 T. spiralis infective ISS3 strain larvae/mouse by the oral route on day 0. Five days later, mice were sacrificed to obtain adult worms from their intestines. Data was analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. The mean ± standard error of mean (SEM) of T. spiralis adult specimens for Group C was 22 ± 7.1; while for Lc-1, Lc-2 and Lc-3 groups it was of 14 ± 3.6, 12.66 ± 5.1, and 2 ± 1.2, respectively. Reduction of the worm load related to that of the control group was of 36.4%, 42.45% and 90.9% for Lc-1, Lc-2 and Lc-3 groups, respectively. Such a reduction was only significant in the Lc-3 Group (P‹0.05). Results indicate that viable L. casei inoculated twice (days –7 and –1) in congenic BALB/c induces a significant protective response against T. spiralis infection.
