ABSTRACT
Introduction: Death has been and is the biggest concern of men and, if it occurs suddenly, then it casts doubts about its possible cause which has led to define it in different forms, depending on the focus of an attending physician, a pathologist or a medical examiner. Objectives: To analyze the different definitions of sudden death from the point of view of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, and present the methodology or medicallegal aspects taken into account for the medical-legal report of a possible sudden death.
Method: A documentary analysis from the definitions given by various authors and previous experiences from the authors’ work was conducted.
Results: There is no consensus among the different specialties about the different definitions and focus given to the type of death or manner of death.
Conclusions: Sudden cardiac death occurs when it is «natural and has a cardiovascular origin», whether it affects a «healthy or apparently healthy» individual in a «short period of time» (onset of symptoms up to 6 hours before death).
