ABSTRACT
P substance (PS) is a neuropeptide, memeber of the tachykinines family that activates the receptor to neurokinin 1
(NKR-1). NKR-1 is a G-protein coupled receptor synthesized in the cellular body of periferic nerves and distributed
throughout the entire nervous system. It is also produced by non-neurologic cells such as epithelial cells,
macrophages, granulocytes, limphocytes and dendritic cells. PS is a potent mediator of neurogenic inflammation
and it is involved in the neuroimmune axis regulating inflammatory reactions of diverse tissues. It has been
demonstrated in animal models that levels of PS are increased in synovial liquid, plasma and serum of patients with
reumathoid arthritis. In this review, a brief description of the findings suggesting that PS may play a crital role in
articular inflammation is presented.
