ABSTRACT
Silicone breast implants have been in use for breast reconstruction and breast augmentation for a long time. Few implantable medical devices have been studied for their safety more extensively than silicone gel-filled breast implants. In the late 80’s anecdotal reports describing a possible association between silicone gel-filled breast implants, and autoimmune diseases were accumulated. Since then, long-term safety data has been important in the evaluation of possible adverse health outcomes related to breast implants. In this article the authors review the available literature on the relationship between the use of silicone gel-filled breast implants and connective tissue or autoimmune diseases, emphasizing the most important epidemiologic studies and meta-analyses. Large-scale studies to date have failed to find any credible association between silicone breast implants and either well-defined connective tissue diseases or atypical connective tissue diseases.
