ABSTRACT
Introduction: The state of the cerebral cortical neurodynamics of discriminative tactile perception is strongly influenced by age. Aging causes decreases tactile discrimination of two closed simultaneously applied stimuli on the tip of the thumbs, while scanning with the Sthesiometric Neurodynamic Methods (SNM). It can be demonstrated that neuroplasticity caused by sustained instrumental practice, cause further development of brain neuroplasticity in musicians may have a protective effect against aging.
Methods: The latter was studied in 28 musicians (Mu) and 36 non-musicians (C) similar in age and education. Each sample was divided into three different age groups: young (19-38), middle, (39-58) and higher (59-78). Basic types of curves and three sthesiometric variables were studied: tactile discrimination thresholds TDT1 and TDT 2 and the variable named length of the plateau of de curve (P).
Results: In both samples was observed that with increasing age there was a progressive decrease of the variable P, associated with a gradual increase in the tactile discrimination thresholds. Which means a decrease in the cerebral cortex neurodynamic because of aging in both samples: mild in the musicians and very marked in the non-musicians. In the latter there were significant differences between the three age groups.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that in the musicians, the deleterious effect of aging is lower than in the non-musicians, probably due to increased neuroplasticity because of the sustained instrumental practice.
