Diabetes Mellitus and its oral complications in adult patients attended in the stomatology Service of Ciro Redondo in 2013

ABSTRACT
There are currently 285 millions of people with diabetes mellitus and there is a tendency to
increase. In the diabetic periodontal disease, tooth decay and tooth loss are the most common
complications, committing the oral health with special treatment needs. The purpose of the
study was to determine the behavior of clinical-epidemiological variables related to the oral
health of people over 20 years old with diabetes mellitus attended in the Stomatology Service
of Ciro Redondo "Raúl Ortiz" polyclinic during the year 2013, evaluating socio-demographic
variables, CPOD index, edentulous rate, as well as needs of stomatologic treatment, general
health condition and habits. 628 patients were included in the study the 65.45% of them were
women and 34.55% men. The prevalence of tooth decay was 81.75%, with 9.52 CPOD index
to the group of 34-44 years of aged and 5.65 for the group of 60-74 years. There was a
69.27% of total edentulous or partial. More than half of edentulous patients showed mobility,
calculation and bleeding. Diabetes mellitus does not increase the risk of tooth decay, but if that
of alterations such as gingivitis, mobility and greater even tooth loss.
