ABSTRACT
Introduction: the World Health Organization estimates that each year 1.300 billion episodes of diarrhea occur in children under five in developing countries. Dehydration is one of the most serious complications of this disease. Objective: to identify the risk factors for dehydration in children with diarrhea.
Method: it was performed a retrospective observational study case-control type in the Pediatric Hospital General Milanes in Bayamo, since January 2012 to December 2013. The variables studied were: age, sex, nutritional status, birth weight, breastfeeding and the maternal factor.
Results: all children under 7 months had 1.24 more chances to become dehydrated for diarrheas and males had 1.5 more times. Malnourished had 5 more opportunities for dehydration by diarrheal symptoms and low weight children had about 2-6 more times, as well as the children of mothers who behaved improperly when the digestive symptoms appeared.
Conclusions: males under 7 months, those who did not received exclusive breastfeeding; the malnutrition and low birth weight were the risk factors of Dehydration for diarrheas. Another factor was the improper behavior of the mother towards the diarrheal episodes.
