ABSTRACT
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common
neurodegenerative disorder and, since it is
associated with aging, the probability of developing
this disease increases with age. The diagnosis of
idiopathic Parkinson’s disease is based on clinical
criteria; however, its differentiation from other forms
of Parkinsonism can be difficult, especially in early
stages of the disease. Transcranial ultrasound has
become a tool for the diagnosis of this disorder,
being very useful for its early diagnosis.
Ultrasonographic findings characteristic of this
disease include increased echogenicity of the
substantia nigra in the midbrain measured through
the temporal bone window. This paper discusses the
usefulness of transcranial ultrasound for early
diagnosis of patients with Parkinson's disease.
