ABSTRACT
Introduction: The 80% of the episodes of nosocomial pneumonia takes place in patients with artificial air way and it is denominated pneumonia associated with the mechanical ventilation. Objective: Identifying the incidence, pronostic factors and outcome of the pneumonia associated with the ventilation in a cohort of not selected population in the intensive care unit of the Hospital "Saturnino Lora Torres."
Method: Analytic and observational study of retrospective cohort, of the patients with the diagnosis of pneumonia associated with the ventilation assisted in the intensive care unit in the understood period of May of 2011 to May of 2012 and that were subjected to epidemic, selective and prospective surveillance during the time that remained hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
Results: It was not found statistical association between the presence of sedation, position of the head, complications, inmovilization for traumatism, surgical interventions, reintubations, intubation of emergency, illness of base; and the mortality for pneumonia; however, an increment in the mortality in the pneumonias of late course exists, as well as in the patients that had coma, gastric protection, previous administration of antimicrobians, empiric inadequate antibioticotherapy and associated illnesses.
Conclusions: The prolonged duration of the mechanical ventilation and the high stay influenced on the mortality.
