ABSTRACT
Objective: The purpose of the study is to determine the frequency of presentation of anxiety in patients scheduled for elective surgery at the Hospital of Gynecology and Obstetrics, IMIEM.
Material and methods: Anxiety has been determined by two surveys that have been validated for this purpose in previous works. The first one, the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) consists of six questions: four to determine anxiety for the surgical or anesthetic event, and two to identify the need for additional information to that already provided; it is rated on a scale of one to five. Spielberg’s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory consists of two parts, each of 20 questions. These scales were applied to 75 patients scheduled for elective surgery and were conducted in the pre-anesthetic consultation; according to the APAIS, 28% of the subjects had anxiety, and according to the Spielberg’s inventory, 0% of these individuals had prior anxious state. Regarding the need for more information, about half of the women referred no need for more explanation than that provided by the surgeon and anesthesiologist.
Results: Preoperative anxiety in the study population was less than the reported; this correlates with little need for additional information and the fact that most of these people had a previous surgical event.
Conclusions: The APAIS is applicable as a diagnostic survey for perioperative anxiety in scheduled patients; the Spielberg’s inventory is complex for the patient; this study is insufficient to determine whether it is useful in our field or not.
