ABSTRACT
Introduction: The security of the patient is based on the necessity of counteracting the
noxious effects that have the adverse events on the patients.
Objective: Determining the impact, in term of inability, in the patients in which it was
reported an incident or adverse event.
Method: Descriptive and prospective study in the polyvalent intensive care unit of the
Provincial Hospital of Cienfuegos during the months of February-April 2010. The
universe was constituted by the 110 admitted patients in the service during the period of
study. For the notification of incident and adverse events, it was revised the
international form of the SEMICYUC in order to determine the graveness according to
category and their relationship with inability of the patient.
Results: The adverse events of higher prevalence are those of categories B and C for a
total of 28.18% and 25.45% representing 31 and 28 mentioned incidents. Those of
greater graveness are the incidents associated with the air road that occupies the
25.45% with 28 incidents. In spite of the existence of adverse events, the patients didn't
suffer invalidating consequences in terms of physical inability.
Conclusions: it was identified the graveness of the adverse events and it was
determined that there was not fatal invalidations in the patients that participated in the
study.
