ABSTRACT
Background: Adverse drug reactions are frequent dermatological conditions, with a wide clinical spectrum
from mild to severe and potentially lethal cases. Our aim was to determine the frequency of the
severe and lethal cases, their clinical pictures and to identify causal drugs and related factors.
Material and methods: This is a retrospective 10 years report (1993–2003) of the cases at the Dermatology
Department at the National Hospital in Paraguay, South America.
Results: 231 cases of adverse drug reactions were studied. 53 were severe cases (22.9%) and 5 of them with a lethal
outcome. The most common clinical features were erythrodermia, Stevens-Johnson’s syndrome, toxic epidermal
necrolysis and hypersensitivity syndrome. The most commonly involved drugs were carbamazepine, phenytoine,
dipirone and diclofenac.
Conclusions: The severe and lethal cases represented almost a quarter of the adverse drug reactions and they
were related to their clinical features, the involved drug and the age of the patient.
